The Classic Marangu Route (6-Day Itinerary)
The 6-day Marangu Route is a popular, classic Kilimanjaro climb often affectionately referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route. It is uniquely known for its comfortable, permanent hut-based accommodation rather than mobile tents, making it an excellent option for those who prefer communal, weather-protected sleeping quarters. Covering a total hiking distance of 64–70 km, this route offers a gradual, steady ascent. It boasts a significantly high success rate when adding the recommended 6th day for acclimatization at Horombo Hut, giving your body the vital time it needs to adapt to the thin air before making the final push to the summit of Uhuru Peak.
Your journey begins at the park headquarters at Marangu Gate, where you will finalize registration before stepping onto the trail. Today's trek takes you on a gentle, steady incline through a dense, vibrant, and damp montane rainforest canopy. Keep your eyes open for colorful birdlife and curious colobus monkeys. After a rewarding 4 to 5 hours of walking, you will arrive at the Mandara Hut complex to enjoy your first night in a cozy wooden cabin.
Altitude: approx. 2,700m
You will start the morning by breaking out of the rainforest canopy, entering the striking, wide-open moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically into a stretch of low shrubs and giant lobelias. You will ascend steadily along rolling hills, crossing small glacial streams while taking in your first magnificent views of the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trek takes roughly 5 to 6 hours before you reach the sprawling village of Horombo Hut.
Altitude: approx. 3,720m
This is a critical, dedicated acclimatization day designed to maximize your chances of a successful summit push. Adhering to the golden rule of trekking—climb high, sleep low—you will take a scenic hike toward the jagged volcanic ridges of Mawenzi Hut or up to Zebra Rocks, a striking striped geological formation. After spending a few hours absorbing the altitude and enjoying a packed lunch, you will descend back to Horombo Hut for a relaxed afternoon and a second night of rest.
Altitude: approx. 3,720m
Today features a long, steady climb into the desolate alpine desert zone. You will cross "The Saddle"—a vast, barren plateau that stretches out between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape here is stark, rocky, and windswept, with little vegetation surviving the extreme conditions. Walking slowly (pole pole) is essential as the air thins out. After 5 to 6 hours of determined hiking, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, a stone structure where you will eat an early dinner and sleep for a few hours before the midnight wake-up call.
Altitude: approx. 4,700m
Your ultimate challenge begins in the freezing darkness around midnight. Navigating by the light of your headlamp, you will tackle a grueling, steep zig-zag path up loose volcanic scree toward the crater rim. You will reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) just in time to witness a spectacular sunrise over the clouds. From there, you will push along the snow-fringed rim for another 1 to 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the true roof of Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you will begin the long descent back down to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue further down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved, deep sleep.
Altitude: Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (Descending to 3,720m)
Altitude: Descending to 1,860m
The final day on the mountain is a joyful, celebratory descent back down through the moorland and into the lush green rainforest. Your joints will welcome the warmer, oxygen-rich air as you retrace your steps for 5 to 6 hours down to the Marangu Gate. Upon arrival at the gate, you will officially sign out with the park rangers, receive your golden summit certificates to commemorate your incredible achievement, and meet your vehicle for the drive back to town.
